Studio X was appointed to design a first-of-its-kind destination cocktail bar in Shatin, Hong Kong, conceived to attract the growing number of discerning professionals who previously had to commute to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island to enjoy an Old Fashioned or a small-batch distilled G&T.
The project was designed as both a hospitality venue and a cinematic experience. Inspired by the glow and sculptural form of traditional paper lanterns, the interiors create a sense of cultural resonance while delivering modern operational efficiency. Layers of light, shadow, and texture evoke an atmosphere of intimacy and storytelling, ensuring that the space feels immersive from the moment guests arrive.
At its core, the design celebrates cultural heritage while reinterpreting it for a contemporary audience. Lantern-like motifs are integrated into architectural elements, furniture, and lighting, transforming symbolic references into tactile experiences. This creates a narrative connection that feels both authentic and aspirational, establishing the venue as a cultural destination as much as a cocktail bar.
Operational precision was a key driver in the layout. Circulation routes, seating clusters, and the bar itself were carefully planned to balance ambience with functionality, ensuring smooth service flow during peak hours. The integration of discreet service zones and efficient back-of-house planning enables staff to deliver consistently high levels of hospitality without compromising guest experience.
The Paper Lantern Club demonstrates how symbolic design language can be translated into a commercially viable model. It shows that cultural cues, when combined with technical detailing, can elevate everyday hospitality into something memorable and distinctive. The venue has quickly become a landmark for Shatin’s nightlife, proving that suburban locations can sustain aspirational destinations when supported by strong design.
More than a cocktail bar, the project reflects Studio X’s ability to fuse cultural storytelling with pragmatic solutions. The result is an environment that resonates with both operators and customers, offering a distinctive identity, smooth operations, and a design language that supports long-term brand value.
